Raising the baseline for cross-border payments

Cross-border payments are moving faster than ever, but customer expectations are moving faster too. Swift’s ambition is to help make international payments feel as seamless as domestic ones — bringing greater speed, transparency and predictability to payment experiences worldwide.

The challenge: closing the consistency gap

The cross-border payments landscape has evolved rapidly, driven by better connectivity, stronger infrastructure and industry-wide innovation. Yet despite this progress, experiences can still vary depending on where and how payments move through the system.

For end users, uncertainty remains a friction point. Costs may not always be fully visible at the outset, delivery times can differ between corridors, and the overall experience may feel less predictable than domestic payments.

Meanwhile, expectations continue to shift. Businesses and consumers increasingly expect international transactions to offer the same clarity, convenience and confidence they experience closer to home.

The next phase of progress is therefore not only about speed, but consistency — creating a more reliable end-to-end experience across borders.

How Swift is helping drive change

Performance across the Swift network has already advanced considerably, with the majority of payments now arriving at beneficiary banks in minutes. This progress creates a strong foundation for the next stage of improvement.

Attention is now turning to the moments that customers experience most directly: the beginning and end of a payment journey. That’s where transparency, predictability and visibility matter most.

To support this, Swift is introducing the Swift payments scheme: a shared framework designed to establish more consistent experiences across the network through aligned rules and common expectations. Working closely with financial institutions globally, the scheme is designed to strengthen transparency, improve payment traceability, support full-value transfers and accelerate settlement where domestic systems make this possible.

At the same time, Swift is investing in the future of global payments infrastructure through the Swift ledger, extending trusted standards into a tokenised, continuously operating payments ecosystem.

Together, these developments aim to strengthen trust, improve consistency and support better outcomes for institutions and the customers they serve.

Why Swift is uniquely placed to lead

Swift’s global reach and neutral role place it at the centre of the cross-border payments ecosystem. Connecting more than 11,500 institutions across over 200 countries and territories, Swift provides the shared infrastructure that helps financial institutions exchange value across borders every day.

This position enables Swift to convene the industry, align approaches and support progress at a scale few organisations can match - helping translate shared ambition into practical change.

What to take away from this episode

  • Swift is helping the industry move beyond speed alone to improve transparency, predictability and trust
  • The Swift payments scheme introduces a shared framework to support more consistent payment outcomes globally
  • Swift is preparing for the future through infrastructure designed for a tokenised, always-on payments environment

Swift Payments Scheme
