Swift Securities View gains rapid momentum in drive to reduce settlement fails

Over 50 of the world’s largest institutions have signed up for the new service that helps reduce settlement fails through clear end-to-end tracking across post-trade processing.

We have it for packages. We have it for pizzas. We even have it for cross-border payments. We’re talking about end-to-end tracking, and until recently, it wasn’t possible to track securities transactions across the settlement chain.

Now, thanks to the new Swift Securities View service, you can.

“Swift Securities View is part of our strategy to enable instant, frictionless and interoperable transactions globally, and it promises to be a game changer for the industry, helping market participants increase settlement efficiency and set the bar for future innovation,” says Jonathan Ehrenfeld, Head of Securities Strategy at Swift.

We’ve collaborated with our community to deliver a service uniquely tailored to meet the specific challenges facing post-trade participants today, from avoiding regulatory penalties for late settlement to preparing for the adoption of T+1.

Fighting fails, cutting costs

Developed together with the securities industry, Swift Securities View brings new levels of transparency to post-trade processing. This is key to reducing settlement fails, which are costing the industry billions of dollars each year.

Unless firms take action, settlement fails – and their related costs – are only set to intensify under the EU’s Central Securities Depository Regulation (CSDR) settlement discipline regime, and the decision by major markets to adopt shorter settlement cycles globally.

“We’ve collaborated with our community to deliver a service uniquely tailored to meet the specific challenges facing post-trade participants today,” says Ehrenfeld, “from avoiding regulatory penalties for late settlement to preparing for the adoption of T+1.”

The service leverages an ISO-standard Unique Transaction Identifier (UTI) to link all Swift messages related to the same securities settlement flow in a transaction chain. This means that all participants - from asset managers, to brokers, to global custodians – have access to automated tracking on both sides of a transaction.

Why settle for settlement fails? Get a better view.

Swift Securities View lets you track securities transactions to quickly identify any issues and avoid costly settlement fails.

Rapid take up

Since its launch in January this year, the service is seeing strong take up across the securities industry.

Already over 50 of the world’s leading financial institutions – which collectively send more than 630 million securities transactions each year – have signed up for Swift Securities View, to quickly identify trades at risk of failing so they can take pre-emptive action.

We launched the service following a successful pilot giving participants a clear view of all steps in the settlement process and bringing the same level of transparency to securities as cross-border payments. The result is a more seamless experience and reduced likelihood of settlement fails that add operational costs of some USD 3 billion a year for the industry.

In the few months since its launch, Swift Securities View already counts participants from all stages in the settlement process among its active members – including asset managers, outsourcers, brokers, global and sub custodians, and CSDs.

Who’s signed up?

Over 50 financial institutions have signed up to Swift Securities View to date, including:

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), BNY Mellon, China Citic Bank, Citco Group of Companies, Credit Suisse, Custody Bank of Japan, Dinosaur Merchant Bank, Euronext Securities, First Abu Dhabi Bank, HSBC Securities Services, Legal & General Investment Management, Nomura Asset Management, Nomura Bank Luxembourg, Northern Trust Investment Operations Outsourcing, The Northern Trust Company and SEB.

We encourage all market participants to join and share in these benefits.”
