SWIFT in action – Our Corporate Social Responsibility engagement in Africa SWIFT has been sponsoring local charities in Africa since 2008, with a special focus on education and under-privileged children. SWIFT has extended its support to micro-finance and financial inclusion initiatives in emerging countries, since they are close to our business and help to reduce poverty and boost prosperity. In South Africa, we support the Phakamani foundation with a project that empowers women to become micro-business owners. They have an integrated programme of micro-enterprise training, group loans and on-going support. SWIFT’s donation is empowering 178 groups, including 892 women.
In 2015 we took the opportunity of the opening of our offices in Ghana and Kenya to sign a partnership agreement with Teach for Ghana and with Nairobits Trust. The Teach for Ghana fellowship programme provides leadership and teaching training, coaching and mentorship to highly-qualified recent graduates committed to teaching underprivileged teens. Nairobits Trust equips less privileged youths from the non-formal settlements of Nairobi with web design knowledge, IT skills and creative multimedia in order to enhance their employment opportunities and entrepreneurship initiatives. It also provides them with soft skills training.
Face for Children in Need in Egypt and Kampala Children Centre in Uganda have been among the beneficiaries of SWIFT financial support. In other countries – Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mauritius we have supported SOS Children’s Villages. When Africa was badly hit by Ebola back in 2014, SWIFT and its employees raised funds to help MSF and the International Red Cross to save lives and contain the epidemic. Lastly, SWIFT last year financed the planting of 10,000 trees in Tanzania, helping Kinesi village’s transition to permaculture. This was achieved through our international partnership with WeForest, an NGO active in reforestation around the world.
For each of our EMEA events, SWIFT sponsors a cause within the framework of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. For the SWIFT South Africa Business Forum 2016 in Johannesburg, we are proud to support NorSA Community Care.
NorSA Community Care is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) in Wellington, South Africa, established in 2006. It aims to change the destiny of families and children in need. NorSA develops, manages and facilitates community based projects investing in the lives of children to ensure that they have ample opportunities to develop to their full potential. It has a specific focus on children and families affected by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and extreme poverty. NORSA Community Care has set up 3 community care centres in the townships of Wellington, De Doorns and Sandhills. SWIFT first supported NorSA Community Care in South Africa at the 2015 African Regional Conference. We are honoured to continue supporting this very worthy cause.
