Operating responsibly and sustainably
SWIFT aims to operate responsibly and sustainably. Reducing our impact on the environment and increasing diversity and inclusion within our company are among our top CSR goals. We extend these objectives to our suppliers and CSR partners by including our sustainability policy in all our contracts.
At SWIFT, we aim to carry out our daily operations while limiting our impact on the environment. This involves a concrete plan for reducing our carbon emissions and engaging our stakeholders in the process.
Since 2007, we have challenged ourselves to reduce our carbon footprint. We aim to become carbon neutral by 2020; and have already managed to reduce our emissions by 71%.
We continue to focus on these key objectives:
- Reduce our energy consumption
- Use green energy whenever possible
- Compensate for the emissions we cannot avoid by buying green certificates
Greening SWIFT began by making our offices energy efficient. In addition, our work-from-home and flexible time policies enable staff to reduce their commuting impact. This way of working allows us to reduce office space, lowering energy output. We also use green electricity where available, and promote a paperless office. We carry out waste sorting and waste reduction campaigns, and promote environmentally friendly behaviour among staff and contractors. In addition, we preserve biodiversity at our headquarters through the installation of an insect hotel and three beehives and by planting an orchard and wildflower meadow. SWIFT regularly finances the planting of trees in developing countries.
The effort to make our data centres more energy efficient is ongoing. A flagship SWIFT operating centre in Switzerland is an example of what we hope to achieve more broadly in minimised carbon emissions.
SWIFT encourages cycling to work as well as the use of electric and hybrid cars amongst staff for an eco-friendly commute.
We reduce the impact of staff travel through carbon offsetting and at Sibos, our largest community event, we invite delegates to act accordingly. At Sibos, SWIFT also takes a number of ‘green’ measures in the areas of waste management, water consumption, biodiversity, recycling and use of public transport.
To extend our commitment to environmental sustainability to our community, we engage with suppliers and customers as well as our staff. Let’s work together toward a greener future.
Diversity & Inclusion
Our vision is rooted in two core concepts: diversity and inclusion. We aim to promote an inclusive culture within our company and our community - where everyone is involved, respected, and connected, regardless of their differences.
Diversity and inclusion are integral to our culture of excellence, innovation, and community. An emphasis on diversity creates an environment of unique individuals with different perspectives on the financial industry and the world. The emphasis on inclusion ensures that our staff members are valued for who they are and what their individuality brings to our culture. The richness of our global workforce delivers new insights that contribute considerable business value.
Our initiatives are based around three core concepts:
We are building a pipeline of diverse, talented professionals and future leaders. To build a naturally inclusive future, SWIFT recruits and develops talent with diversity in mind. Our talent identification, acquisition, development, and mentorship programmes emphasise inclusion so as to lead to broader company awareness and a more representative workforce. In short, we make sure the SWIFT view of talent is not restricted by gender, age, ethnicity, orientation, or physical appearance.
A company-wide Key Performance Indicator (KPI) tracks statistics on the number of women we hire externally to better inform SWIFT’s executive on this important metric.
It is crucial to communicate with our staff members about the importance of diversity to create more inclusive offices. By launching Balance@SWIFT, an internal network where staff bring up and discuss topics on diversity and inclusion, we involve our staff in a dialogue about acceptance, tolerance, and how diversity is important for business growth.
We offer education modules and workshops on relevant topics to enact our collection vision, such as the issue of unconscious bias. These internal initiatives help staff members bridge culture gaps; an important step for any global company.
These and other events and programmes help move us toward solutions that will inherently promote diversity and inclusion in our offices.
Finally, we aim to spread our message throughout the financial industry and community. We have the opportunity, as a global intermediary, to facilitate dialogue about the business value of an inclusive workforce to our customers, suppliers, and partners. Whenever we host an event, we take the opportunity to further advance our vision for diversity and inclusion.
