Sibos delegates look to the future of financial services

Distinguished futurist Paul Saffo to headline the Sibos closing plenary: inspirational foresight informed by thoughtful hindsight

Published on 11 Oct 2010

After a week of vigorous dialogue, doing business and networking, Sibos delegates will convene on Thursday afternoon for the Sibos closing plenary session.

The plenary will follow a now traditional recipe: delegates will look back on the key takeaways from Sibos while also looking forward - in this case, much further forward - into the future of financial services.

To take them on this journey, Sibos will welcome distinguished futurist, Paul Saffo. A forecaster with over two decades of experience exploring long-term technological change and its impact on business and society, Saffo advises private and governmental clients worldwide, and teaches at Stanford University.

A thought-leader and prescient provocateur, Saffo combines a rare ability to synthesize complex ideas with the practical implications of emerging trends and new technologies, guiding organizations in planning successful futures. He untangles the future, underscores the difference between innovation and disinvention, and picks implausible certainties from a seemingly uncertain future.

Paul Saffo is also on the board of directors of The Long Now Foundation. This association of thinkers and futurists provides the inspiration for Sibos' own Long Now sessions that will seek to map out how the financial services industry may look - and the challenges it will face - in the next 10-20 years. These Long Now sessions are part of the innovation stream. Saffo will be following the sessions throughout the week and will report on them during the closing plenary.

This unique window on the future will be informed by a summary of the other key takeaways from the Sibos week, presented by SWIFT's deputy chairman, Stephan Zimmermann. Presenting a combination of video summaries and personal insights, Zimmermann will deliver a thoughtful reflection on Sibos 2010.

Join the Sibos closing plenary on Thursday 28 October in the plenary room.
