SWIFT will be hosting in Mumbai from June 1-2 2011 - "Innotribe Mumbai - Mobile Payments: Connecting the unbanked". The event will explore the ways in which mobile technologies are enabling greater financial inclusion.
Mobile financial services constitute a fast growing market and play a key developmental role in numerous emerging markets. Estimates suggest that just over 1 billion people have access to traditionally structured banking services: the mobile market, with more than 5 billion users worldwide, extends the reach of financial services to the "unbanked".
Innotribe Mumbai will examine the dynamics between the banked and unbanked communities. With participants ranging from global banks, carriers and mobile device vendors, platform and service providers to local and international entrepreneurs, the emphasis of this conference will be on enabling discussions about creating new and innovative services. The event will also address the various challenges mobile financial services still face. The participants will learn about the current state of play in the mobile payments business, while also getting exposure to longer-term perspectives. Discussions will revolve around the future of money and the dramatic business model shifts many market players are likely to undergo as that future becomes a reality.
Peter Vander Auwera, Innovation Leader, SWIFT, says: "Innotribe Mumbai is the ideal platform to interact with a powerful combination of people ranging from an exciting local mix of entrepreneurs to senior representatives from the mobile and financial services industries. Innotribe is designed to spark creativity among participants, by exposing them to thinking from the edges of our ecosystem - about new technologies, new ways of doing business, new corporate cultures, new forms of online economy. Trend-watchers and business and technology innovators will share their insights on the leading trends shaping our industries in the digital era and how these can enable financial inclusion."
Launched by SWIFT at Sibos in Hong Kong in 2009, Innotribe is an initiative to enable collaborative innovation in financial services. It is built around an energising mix of education, new perspectives, collaboration and facilitation. Innotribe brings together strategists, business and technology leaders, trend-setters and trend-watchers as well as thinkers interested in shaping the future as well as doers looking to implement it. Innotribe events - like Innotribe Mumbai - are one of the tools Innotribe has developed to facilitate collaborative innovation.
Innovation was at the heart of SWIFT's invention in 1973 when its founding members came up with an ambitious idea: connect correspondent banks around the world to replace the telex. Innovation remains central to SWIFT's proposition today and Innotribe fosters collaborative innovation within the SWIFT eco-system.
